Street Eats
Stepping out for a meal has never been so satisfying as when dining at these GTA restaurants on wheels.
City hall may still be debating regulations on street food, but Torontonians will happily wait in round-the-block lines at festivals and special food truck locations around the city for their chance to get a taste of the multicultural on-the-go delights offered by our pioneering food mavens.
Hearty home-cooked Italian comfort food is on the menu at Rome’n Chariot, where bruschetta on ciabatta and chicken parmesan sliders will add warmth to the briefest of lunch breaks. Top it off with a traditional biscotti and espresso that can be enjoyed guilt-free in the knowledge that Rome’n Chariot’s policy is to never throw away food, instead giving any excess to those in need.
Comfort is also on the menu at Fidel Gastro’s, where the ample selection of sandwiches puts the classic PB&J to shame. Try The Gorgeous Jorge instead, an inspired pairing of peanut-butter pulled pork, bacon jam and crackling pigskin. Or, if pub grub is more your style, the British cuisine of The Feisty Jack will hit the spot. “Smash Smash, Bang Bang” bangers and mash make for the perfect make-it-through-the-day breakfast.Indulging is always easy when it comes to food truck eats, and the Blue Donkey Streatery is no exception. Greek specialties are (expertly) turned on their head with items like the fried calamari pita, with Greek salad, calamari, tzatziki and french fries all wrapped up into one awesomelydelicious eat-while-you-go package.
Once the main meal is done, it’s time for dessert. Whether it’s sticky toffee pudding at The Feisty Jack, a classic Canadian maple BeaverTail from the GTA’s mobile BeaverTails truck or the baked-from-scratch treats of Curbside Bliss Cupcakes (we’d go for the Guinness or peanut-butter fluffernutter flavours), you can’t go wrong. And with temperatures finally on the rise, there’s no excuse not to get outside and enjoy what the streets of the city have to offer your eyes and your tastebuds.
