This year’s annual Maple Leafs Indigenous Celebration Game featured limited-edition Leafs merchandise from Indigenous-owned small businesses.
Presented by Mastercard, the Indigenous Playmaker Marketplace celebrated culture, creativity and community — spotlighting makers whose stories craft and impact extended far beyond the rink. Leafs fans were invited to shop for limited-edition merchandise created exclusively by Indigenous-owned small businesses, with all proceeds going directly back to the entrepreneurs.
Mastercard Canada Marketing & Communications Senior Vice President Shawna Miller sat down with City Life for an exclusive interview to discuss the impact and success of the initiative.
Q: The response to the Indigenous Celebration Game has exceeded expectations. What do you believe resonated the most with fans and motivated them to respond with such immediate support?
A: Small businesses are the fabric of the Canadian economy, and the enthusiasm from fans at the Indigenous Celebration Game on January 10th was so high that almost all items sold out during the game night. That level of passion is a true testament to what’s possible when brands like Mastercard and MLSE authentically support Indigenous small businesses — the community and fans rally to support them.
Our priority was putting Indigenous small-business voices front and centre to let their creativity and craftsmanship shine. From the products created for the Indigenous Playmaker Marketplace presented by Mastercard to the immersive drum circle performance, the custom flag by Indigenous artist Jennifer Taback as well as content amplified throughout the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mastercard social channels, fans connected with the people behind the work, which helped drive such strong and immediate support.
Q: What role do moments like live sporting events play in creating emotional connection and momentum for community-driven initiatives like this one?
A: Mastercard brings people closer to their passions and this program is just one example of that. Live sporting events create powerful shared moments, making them a natural platform for community-driven initiatives. Through our partnership with MLSE, the Indigenous Celebration Game provided an authentic opportunity to support Indigenous small businesses in a way that resonated with fans while building a stronger digital economy for all.
