Since 1993, the family-owned and operated Besmeh Rug Company has provided high-quality handwoven rugs that are true works of art.

From humble beginnings in Karbala, Iraq, the Mahdi family has specialized in the rug industry for three generations. With the success of their family-operated stores in Iraq and Kuwait, they were eager to bring their success and passionate work ethic to Toronto. For 26 years, their first store on Bay Street has flourished, making it a beacon location in the rug industry.

The Mahdi family know better than anyone that identifying the weavings of any rug tells a story, that how it’s crafted reveals its quality and how to find a customer’s perfect rug that will inevitably pass down to their children for generations to come.

Q: What aspect of your work do you love the most?
A: One of the things we love most about this profession is that we are constantly surrounded by art. Understanding the process and workmanship behind these carpets develops a profound appreciation for this art form. We are driven by the thrill of finding unique and rare antique pieces. It is especially exciting to discover pieces we have never seen the likes of before despite our decades of experience in this industry. Another important and satisfying aspect of this work is helping our customers find the perfect carpet and hearing back from them years later, to express their satisfaction.

Q: What makes Besmeh Rug Company unique and stand out from other businesses in the same industry?
A: Our years of experience and excellent collection distinguish us from other businesses in the same industry. We have experience in all the different types of Persian rugs, allowing us to build an excellent collection to provide our customers with a vast selection to choose from. We carry antique, new, city-made, tribal and village- made rugs of varying qualities and designs. We can confidently say that we have one of the best selections in Canada.

Q: What does your community mean to you after all your years of service?
A: Regardless of where we open a shop, we have always placed importance on serving our community by providing them with quality products that they would remember us for. We strive to create lifelong relationships with all of our customers and not just sell them a single item and say goodbye. We also are always ready to serve our customers not only by selling them carpets but also by helping them wash and restore their rugs, assisting them in trading in their rugs, and providing them with professional advice or appraisals for their existing rugs. Our community is everything; they make all of this possible. Had it not been for the relationships we spent years building with our various communities, we would not be able to operate today.
