A new study shows that the overwhelming amount of screen time children now experience is linked to a higher risk of depression, anxiety and ADHD.
A sweeping new Nature Portfolio study is reframing the youth mental health crisis as a largely preventable behavioural issue, linking excessive screen time among children and adolescents in the United States to a sharp rise in psychological disorders.
Drawing on data from more than 50,000 children aged six to 17, the research found that spending four or more hours a day on screens is associated with significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, ADHD and behavioural disorders. The findings are stark: the likelihood of depression rises by 61 per cent, anxiety by 45 per cent, behavioural or conduct problems by 24 per cent, and ADHD by 21 per cent among heavy screen users.
Crucially, the study identifies why this relationship exists. Reduced physical activity and disrupted sleep routines emerge as the dominant mediating factors. Physical activity alone accounts for up to 39 per cent of the link between screen use and mental health outcomes, while irregular bedtimes contribute nearly 24 per cent and short sleep duration just over seven per cent.
“What’s most important is that we now know the main determinants and protective factors regarding a range of mental health issues in children. The odds can be significantly reduced with adjustments in behaviours such as physical activity and expanding the tools we can use to combat these illnesses,” says Dr. Hannah Nearney, M.D., clinical psychiatrist and U.K. Medical Director at Flow Neuroscience, a European medical technology company that sells an at- home, non-invasive brain stimulation treatment for depression that combines a transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) headset with a behavioural therapy app.
The problem is that these habits are already becoming increasingly common. Nearly one in three children now exceeds healthy screen-time limits, normalizing behaviour that researchers say is structurally harmful. Only one in five children meets the recommended guidelines of at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, and just one in four maintains a consistent weekday sleep routine.
Clinicians at Flow Neuroscience warn that the crisis extends beyond behavioural risks. Children, they argue, face limited treatment alternatives and are frequently overprescribed antidepressants despite the age restrictions and safety concerns around SSRIs, including a small but measurable increase in suicidality tied to their use.
Although non-drug technologies such as tDCS are gaining scientific support and an FDA-approved adult device is expected to launch in the U.S. later this year, pediatric approval remains out of reach.
The study’s implications are clear: modifying children’s day-to-day routines and behaviour in relation to screen use, movement, and sleep need to be brought back to dinner-table conversations.
