Living Coral is the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2019

Pantone just released Living Coral as its Colour of the Year for 2019. The colour experts at Pantone, best known for its Colour Matching System, describe the cheery hue as “animating” and “life-affirming” — definitely a change from 2018’s Ultra Violet purple. Pantone chooses a new colour each year to represent fashion, technology and other trends in our ever-changing lifestyles and environment.

“Just as coral reefs are a source of sustenance and shelter to sea life, vibrant yet mellow, Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment,” says Pantone of its announcement on Dec. 6.

With all of the global changes in climate, sea levels and ecosystems, the brand decided to choose a colour that represents the value and beauty of nature.

“In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent colour mesmerizes the eye and mind,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Pantone Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.”

Brands have quickly hopped on board to help people incorporate this vibrant, but mellow, peachy tone into their lives. IKEA Canada has grouped together all of the furniture and home accents that it carries in this warm shade. “Living Coral is a fantastic choice and a beautiful complement to what you will see in the New Year at IKEA with our spring product range where the palette really supports our message around putting yourself first — creating rituals that will benefit just you, breaking out of that dark winter bubble, connecting with friends and nature again,” says Carmen Ciesielski, interior design leader for IKEA Canada.

“We’re also excited to see various shades of coral in many of our products that we carry throughout the year such as our iconic POÄNG armchair and lounge cushions to accessories like bath towels, lanterns and candles. Hurra (Swedish for hooray) for ‘living coral’!”

Companies are also suggesting makeup and beauty products, as well as product designs, décor and packaging in this hue. Brands like Marc Jacobs are ahead of the curve and have already showcased this colour on runways around the world.

Pantone has been choosing the Colour of the Year since 2000. Before this year’s Ultra Violet, there was Greenery in 2017, and in 2016, the brand chose its first-ever duo: Serenity (baby blue) and Rose Quartz.
